16 Sign Failed – Small Business Trends

Some of life’s funniest moments are completely coincidental. That’s certainly the case when it comes to some of the funniest and most hilarious characters. Whether the result of careless design, normal wear and tear or human intervention, a funny sign can bring a smile to people’s faces while causing inconvenience or even missing out on business for an establishment. It’s hard not to take these silly signs literally and laugh at the humorous faux pas.

Hilarious sign failed

Whatever they had to say, we can’t help but be thankful for the mistakes on these funny signs. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that the business owner enjoyed the wrong ad as much. What else can you do but laugh at the funny sign?

1. The perfect pastime before pandemic

This fencing academy board has no typos or formatting errors, but we can’t help but think that the business owner may not have delivered their intended message, either. Or maybe it was. Covid-related craziness made many people want to stab someone anyway.

2. That’s one way to give back…

Some of the funniest characters ended up like this thanks to a clever prankster. In this charity ad, someone thought they would be smart and shorten the word “shoes.” It may not be what the clothing drive is looking for, but this funny sign is definitely more fun.

3. That’s one way to say “welcome”

A missing letter can completely transform a sign’s message. We doubt that the owner of this store intended to verbally attack his customers when he hung this sign on his storefront. Will customers laugh at the funny sign, or run in the opposite direction?

4. This band is for you, Macho Man Randy Savage

Lighted up signs are notorious for having the funniest failed signs. All it takes is a broken light bulb or two, and the message can change from a company’s name to something a lot funnier. Such was the case for this Goodyear sign. Is that you, Macho Man Randy Savage? Ooh yes! Now that’s a funny fail sign!

Funny Sign Fail – Restaurants

Restaurant signs are some of the most visible, and funny restaurant signs are some of the best signs to fail. Whether it was a design flaw or a burned-out light bulb, we appreciate the mishaps these hilarious and fun displays have caused, no matter what they had to say.

5. Take a nice warm bath in a tub of…gravy?

After a long day on the road, there is nothing better than having a hot meal and relaxing in a bubble bath. Why not save time and take that bath in a delicious gravy as described in this one funny photo. It’s great for your complexion!

6. Now Serve Chili Dogs in a Can

Another sign failed caused by faulty light bulbs. Somehow we don’t think A&W customers will show up for some mouthwatering cans of burgers and fries. In any case, it has a long shelf life!

7. You want fries with those mice?

We get that McDonald’s loves the Golden Arches logo, but whoever designed this sign had to rethink the message. Since when are rodents on the official menu of this restaurant? And isn’t $10 a bit steep for a bag of vermin?

8. When Neon Signs Get You Wrong?

Faulty light bulbs strike again in this interesting example of a board fail. Dynasty Buffet’s owner should have stocked up on some extra lights to prevent what would eventually happen. Welcome, it’s the nasty buffet!

Funny Signs – Shop

Stores are full of so many signs, it’s only natural to have a few mistakes. Luckily for all of us, some of these failed store signs result in a laugh and a smile.

9. My PB tastes a little sour

Another example of a graphic designer not paying attention, we wonder if anyone bothered to read this sign before running this ad for lemons. Making orange juice? Get up, buttercup!

10. This board won’t work for a few more days

Someone in this shop got a little too scared to show their “yellow” bananas. Fortunately for this business owner, this drawing error is corrected within a few days. We wonder how many responses the grocer has gotten.

11. Don’t keep anything for a limited time

A likely misprint led to this fun sign not being from Target. Shoppers will be so grateful to know that they didn’t spare any extra from those yellow tortillas. Someone needs to read clearly what they print before putting it up.

12. It’s the point of no return to this liquor store

In yet another hilarious case of a neon lamp malfunction, this liquor store’s sign now welcomes its customers with an invitation to die. What are they actually putting in that drink?

Funniest characters in toilets

Who doesn’t love good toilet humor? It’s just a funny topic. After all, everyone uses the facilities at a certain time of the day. Even better, unintentional toilet humor caused by a handy sign fails.

13. Thanks for the encouragement, but we’re good

We know the graphic designer who created this Home Depot sign had no intention of using it for restrooms, but we sure are happy with it! Was this board chosen at random, or was it employees showing their personality?

14. Sounds like a personal problem… Good to have you at a Walgreens

Okay, so this sign wasn’t in a toilet, but it does make for some effective toilet humor. In fact, we have to wonder if the fluorescent lights themselves didn’t show a sense of humor by choosing to burn out in such a hilarious sequence. Is there a line for the toilet at Walgreen’s?

15. Better not have nuclear weapons in your pockets

Then you have the sign fail that occurs because the graphic designer speaks a different language and terms are mistranslated. We have to believe that’s what happened when this board was made. After all, nobody cares about atomic bombs sneaking into the toilet…or does it?

16. When You Just Need Some Privacy

We have all been tempted to take control of a bathroom in the workplace. Sometimes you just need a little more privacy than a booth can provide. Looks like an employee named Ben figured out how to score that coveted privacy by changing this board. Is this a fail sign, or a win sign?

Check your signage!

Sign Fails like this and plenty of others may be hilarious to read, but they can turn into horror stories for small business owners. Make sure to always check your signage — including font, graphics, alignment, and spacing — before printing and especially before displaying it, or you could end up with a drawing error.
