Fortunately, there are some productive questions to ask potential employees to help you gauge their trustworthiness.
To help, a panel of Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC) members share their thoughts on the following question:
“What is the most productive question you can ask a potential employee to measure their trustworthiness? Why is this important?”
Here’s what they suggest you ask at your next interview.
1. What did you dislike about your previous job or boss?
“Ask one thing they didn’t like about their previous job or boss and see if their answer is authentic. Playing the blame game says a lot about their ability to criticize gracefully, their level of compassion, and their view of responsibility. If they answer based on all the factors that led to the problem, they may be emotionally intelligent, which is a sign of reliability.” ~ Givelle Lamano, law firm Lamano
2. What are your core values and vision?
“Especially in smaller companies, you want their core values to match yours. If they don’t, it will cause unrest, and that person will either leave of their own accord or be asked to leave later. 3. What are your weaknesses?
“Surprisingly, everyone is having a hard time answering this one. But this general question is a good way to find out if a prospective employee has a healthy level of self-awareness, where they can be open and honest, and if they let these weaknesses hold them back.” ~ Shu Saito, all filters
4. What is a problem you have faced and how did you solve it?
“The best way to measure the trustworthiness of a potential employee is to ask them questions about problems they have faced or even caused in previous jobs, and how they solved them. 5. When has being late affected your work?
“Ask your employee about a time when being late affected their work. This is a good question because it helps you understand whether the candidate sees timing as a critical factor for success. It also reflects their work ethic and helps you understand if the candidate is trustworthy.” ~ Thomas Griffin, Optin Monster
6. What would it take for you to leave this job?
“Ask them what it takes to leave the job. Honest candidates will tell you the criteria they envisioned for their dream job, along with the likes and dislikes about an employer. 7. Would you take a pay cut if necessary?
“The most productive question to ask a potential employee is whether they would accept a pay cut if the company ran into trouble. This question is productive because it gauges their sense of loyalty and commitment to the company. 8. What is a time when you made a wrong decision?
“Ask your potential employee about a time they made the wrong decision. This question will help you determine whether the potential candidate is willing to take responsibility for his or her actions. 9. What is an obvious shortcoming of the company/product?
“I would ask a question about an obvious flaw in my company or product. I think an honest candidate who can help the business grow will do the tough job of letting me know that there is room for improvement.
