Apple Reinvents CarPlay: Here’s How It Will Change Driver Experience

Apple Inc AAPL revealed on Monday that it is making significant changes to its CarPlay software that will greatly enhance its capabilities, including access to real-time vehicle-related features such as temperature control, speed, fuel level and more.

What happened: The tech giant said it is reinventing its CarPlay offering and is in talks with at least 14 automakers, including Ford Motor Co F and Honda Motor Co HMC for its integration into the car.

The list did not mention Tesla Inc. TSLA, as it has shown a reluctance to use Apple technology for its electric vehicles in the past.

“We’ve been working with automakers to reinvent the in-car experience across all driver’s screens. It’s the very best of both your car and your iPhone. It’s beyond what you can do with CarPlay today.” said Emily Schubert, Engineering Manager – Car Experience, Apple, at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference.

“To do this, your iPhone interacts with your vehicle’s real-time systems in a privacy-friendly on-device manner, displaying all of your driving information such as speed, RPMs, fuel level, temperature, and more.”

Schubert said vehicles will announce the new CarPlay by the end of next year.

Why it matters: Apple is delving deeper into automotive technology and data as it gets involved in many traditional functions beyond applications and third-party developers.

The tech giant, rumored to be building its own electric car for years, said more than 98% of cars in the US have Apple CarPlay and 79% of buyers are only considering a car that works with the feature.

Price action: Apple stock closed 0.5% higher at $146.1 Monday, according to data from Benzinga Pro.
