A simple, practical way to finally make the changes you’ve been dreaming of. FYI, the title is what it is on purpose – it’s a play on words – get it? I destroy myself sometimes.

Ahh, the best-laid plans… often don’t go out. Every entrepreneur has been there to a greater or lesser extent. You read something, see something, well, you pay thousands of dollars to a consultant, but you don’t really do something that you want to do, that you know you should do, and that you’re being paid for.

So what about that?

Barry Moltz, the guy you call to “let go” of your business, has an answer in his latest book, ChangeMasters: How to Make the Changes You Already Know You Need to Make.

After decades of helping small business owners move their businesses forward, he was often frustrated to see that they just weren’t putting their new plans into action.

“I used to have a tendency to blame myself for doing nothing. Did they not trust me enough to take important steps or did I just give them bad advice?” writes Moltz in the introduction.

If you run a consulting firm, you know what this feels like… frustrating at best and emotionally draining at worst. If your customers don’t implement the recommendations you’ve agreed to and then don’t see any results, it often reflects more on you than it does on them.

And here are the three words Moltz wants you to know: It’s not your fault.

After reading this book you will understand why YOU can’t move forward and (this is the best part) HOW to start the subtle process of making the changes you so desperately want to make in every area of your business; managing people, sales and marketing, finance and more.

Done, set, change

One of the first things Moltz talks about in “ChangeMasters” is that we’re stuck thinking that taking the first step is the beginning of change.

As a marketer, I take the blame for that. We always congratulate people for taking the “first step to…[insert some awesome outcome here]† But that’s not good enough. I always say that buying a treadmill or a gym membership won’t get you fit. You have to do the work.

Likewise, reading “ChangeMasters” won’t make the change you so desperately want to make to your business (or to your customers). You must choose to change.

The good news for you is that “ChangeMasters” makes change as easy as possible.

Discover the secret to change in about 20 minutes

Moltz did something in this book that is subtle yet powerful; he’s formatted this book so that you can quickly flip through 167 pages in a few minutes—just to get a feel for what’s in it.

Each chapter is part of your business, and each numbered subheading is a step in the process. I was able to get an overview of this book from start to finish in about 20 minutes.

Very little fluff – All inspiration and action

Like most business books, you’ll find some personal stories of how Moltz implemented some of these techniques in his own life. These are just a few pages written in the beginning to show you that he not only researches and reports, but actually does the work he recommends.

But here it ends. After that it’s all about you. And I like that.

Numerous research and sources summarized

“ChangeMasters” just an opinion. It’s research. Moltz shares his extensive research in a Resources section in the back. I love that he includes the name of the study as well as links to his resources so you can read more about the areas you’re interested in.

Do the work — in just 20 steps and 20 minutes

Perhaps my favorite part is the Change worksheet in the attachment. It’s almost like sitting next to Moltz and going through the process.

This exercise is designed with busy small business owners in mind. He tells you in the instructions to give yourself 20 minutes. This keeps you motivated and prevents you from overthinking.

The hardest part about this process is admitting to yourself how much you avoid the things you want to do in your business.

Are you talking to me?

“ChangeMasters” is for you if…

You are a business owner who has wasted thousands of dollars on consultants, agencies or programs to help you achieve a goal that has not been realized. You are a consultant who works with companies and you feel frustrated and depressed because you have done everything you can to help your clients, but they cannot or will not implement your recommendations. You’re ready to start your own business, but haven’t gotten to where you want to be.

“ChangeMasters” is a great book for entrepreneurs and consultants alike. It’s packed with information, resources, and action steps that will help you finally make the changes you need to make in your business.
