One person who has embodied this mindset of entrepreneurship is model, business owner, content creator and musician Charly Jordan. Jordan has quickly become one of the most well-known faces on social media, with a following across multiple platforms, with nearly 5 million followers on her Instagram and over eight million followers on her TikTok page.

But her role in the entertainment industry goes beyond being a social media influencer. The creator turned her success on social media into a flourishing career as an entrepreneur and musician.

In addition to her work creating social media content for brands such as Revolve, Savage x Fenty, BooHoo, Alo Yoga and others, she is also the founder of two online brands of her own. Smoke Roses is Jordan’s answer to push the smoking industry in a more natural direction. Beauty In Pain is a fashion and jewelry brand on a mission to destigmatize the conversation about mental health through its clothing and accessories. She hopes to take the brand one step further as a charity in the future.

With a long history of doing shows, the emerging talent became one of the few female DJs to have a Las Vegas residency at Zouk Group. As a singer, Jordan has amassed millions of listeners around the world, most recently with back-to-back singles titled Innerbloom and Soak Her.

Jordan reflects on how her tumultuous upbringing shaped her success as an entrepreneur and why perseverance and structure are her two most important virtues.

The importance of perseverance

Born in Las Vegas, Charly Jordan grew up in a reserved household where showing her shoulders or knees and even drinking soda was not allowed. “I did all these things because it was meant to be and because my family was religious,” Jordan explains. By the age of 17, Jordan knew that the path her parents had taken her for so long was not going in the direction she wanted. “I’d seen enough to realize I didn’t want to,” she said.

During her senior year of high school, Jordan excelled in her athletic career in track and field, ranking fourth in the nation for hurdles. Jordan faced the difficult decision to move on with a life that left her unfulfilled—or left everything behind. On the one hand, she had prepared multiple scholarships that would ensure her education, but on the other, she was burned out and tired of being forced to live a certain way. The pressure of her decision began to give way. “I had panic attacks,” Jordan recalls. The panic attacks escalated to self-harm and eventually pushed the young woman past her breaking point.

Jordan took a leap of faith and canceled her scholarship, leaving all certainty in her future. Jordan battled a rough life at home and was evicted from her home and left homeless for the last three months of her senior year. “I took my phone and car and left,” she said. The young maker lived an hour’s drive from her school at the time, attendance became a problem and she barely graduated as a result. “I walked alone during graduation — that’s crazy having spent your whole life going to school, and that one moment to celebrate, none of my family showed up. My life was falling apart.”

With nothing but her phone and car, Jordan started taking advantage of her newfound freedom to connect with other people in the social media industry. She started DMing photographers and models and went on road trips to collaborate with others. Jordan would travel to neighboring states, stopping in national parks and other natural areas to capture their beauty. Barely able to make ends meet, Jordan began documenting her travels, making videos and collecting footage along the way. With just over 100,000 followers on her Instagram page at the time, things were starting to look better. “I was just doing it for fun, then as a job and a year later I had over a million followers, which is some pretty crazy growth,” Jordan explains. Her following continued to grow exponentially with nearly a million new followers a year while living out of her car and lounging on the couch.

Although he grew quickly on social media, modeling for the social media guru was initially challenging. Jordan’s body was criticized as “too muscular” for her to work as a fashion model. “When I hit 150,000 (followers) a brand really flew me somewhere for the first time. I was doing all the wildlife photography and modeling. I’m really thankful I actually started that because I didn’t get regular modeling jobs. Nobody wanted me contract because I was too muscular,” explains Jordan. As a model, Jordan started working with brands such as TenTree and Pura Vida, often stopping in third world countries for charitable work.

Jordan led a double life, spending time in the most beautiful places in the world and then returning home. “People on Instagram saw this beautiful life that I wanted to have, but it wasn’t my reality. But six months later, that became my life,” she said.

The importance of structure

Much of Jordan’s success depends on her tight-knit, weekly schedule and work environment. The influencer says that assigning different tasks and projects to each day of the week and having her own space to focus is key to her success.

“I try not to complicate things. I have a million things going on,” she said. “Every day is dedicated to something different: Monday is self-care, Tuesday is YouTube, Wednesday is music, Thursday is phone calls and Friday is a day to catch up on everything I’ve found out,” she continues. “Having an intense schedule is the only way to manage it all.”

Combining so many responsibilities at once, Jordan understands the importance of a tight, disciplined schedule to properly manage time and stay productive.

Final Thoughts

She started her career on social media with only her phone and a car, as she went through obstacles in her way to move forward and build a more than successful life for herself. Her story is inspiring and shows how perseverance can help you reap the benefits.

In addition to the will to keep going when the going gets tough, structure plays an important role in Jordan’s success as an independent entrepreneur. Maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle and structure in your daily life is key.
