Has Twitter fired an executive who was on paternity leave?

It was reported this week that Twitter’s head of consumer Kayvon Beykpour was going to resign. Was Beykpour forced to leave the company while on paternity leave?

What Happened: As Benzinga reported this week, two Twitter Inc TWTR executives were said to be leaving the company. Beykpour shared his thoughts on the move in a Twitter thread.

“Interrupting my paternity leave to share some latest @twitter related news: I am leaving the company after more than 7 years. The truth is that this is not how and when I envisioned leaving Twitter, and this was not my decision. Parag asked me to leave after letting me know he wants to steer the team in a different direction,” Beykpour said. tweeted

The tweet mentions Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal, and it certainly sounds like the consumer Twitter head was fired while on paternity leave.

Beykpour, co-founder of Periscope, a live broadcasting app acquired by Twitter, shared several positive comments.

“I take comfort in a few things: I am Insanely proud of what our joint team has achieved in recent years and of my own contribution to this journey. Twitter’s DAU has grown more than 87% since Q2 2019 and our team has been pushing bold and exciting new evolutions to the product (such as Spaces, Communities, Topics, Creator tools, Safety controls) in a much much faster pace than at any time in the past decade.”

Beykpour thanked several people on Twitter, including co-founder Jack Dorsey for believing in him and Periscope.

Beykpour said he had nothing to say about the future as he is “still on paternity leave!”

Why it matters: Beykpour announced on March 29 that he would be mostly silent on Twitter as he began paternity leave.

Coincidentally, Agrawal took paternity leave from Twitter after becoming CEO of the company and was criticized by some tech executives for taking time off.

Twitter to be acquired by Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk for $44 billion. Musk is a known workaholic who might consider changing Twitter’s current policy, which provides for 20 weeks of paternity leave for employees.

Agrawal said in late April that Twitter was not planning any layoffs until Musk’s takeover deal closes later this year.

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian may have said it best when he referred to Beykpour’s resignation.

“Damn, did they do that to him on #PaternityLeave?” ohanian tweeted

Price action: Twitter shares fell 10% to $40.70 on Friday after Musk said the Twitter acquisition was being delayed.
