Content Coach/Counties Editor The Asheville Citizen Times/citizen-times.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a content coach/counties editor to work with an award-winning group of accountability reporters. The ideal candidate will have a track record of high-impact work in accountability reporting, with a readiness to conceive of and execute big projects, while also editing ongoing watchdog and enterprise reporting. Foreign language skills, a background in public records access and familiarity with data analysis would all be a plus. But this is most important: a core familiarity with watchdog journalism and helping your reporters execute a daily plan on what that looks like, digitally. This editor will lead a team of reporters covering Henderson and Madison counties and who are tasked with delivering enterprise while still covering their daily beat. We need someone who can set the pace and prioritize. With the support of our newsroom and our nationwide network, this editor will help lead a team of experienced reporters and some up-and-comers to the next level. Asheville, North Carolina is a vibrant community in the heart of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and is home to some of the nation’s best mountain biking, hiking and kayaking. It’s also known as a top restaurant destination and boasts dozens of craft breweries. Responsibilities: Lead a team of reporters and collaborate with others across the newsroom to identify and execute relevant, impactful journalism. Drive innovative storytelling in all formats, from written word to video, audio and graphics. Conceptualize stories, work with reporters to develop reporting plans and edit their work into a polished and engaging final form. Edits projects and complex stories, as well as daily stories and follow-ups from team members. Guides journalists by consultation and coaching before, during and after the creation of content. Participates in community-connection discussions to advocate for audiences. Identifies and addresses training needs of individuals and groups. Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions. Performs other duties as necessary. Requirements: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Five years of professional and/or media management experience. Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct. Must embrace peer-to-peer training, as both a teacher and student. Strong news judgment and editing skills. Comfortable in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations. A passion for empathetic, compassionate storytelling. Attention to detail and accuracy. Able to build a coverage strategy using analytics and innovation. Experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms. Exceptional planning and organizational skills. Understanding use of metrics, social-media and SEO knowledge. Self-motivation and self-direction. Strong grasp of journalism skills (reporting and editing) and advanced knowledge of writing, spelling, grammar, AP and local style. Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment. Applies innovative, creative thinking to support the company’s goals.
