|Job Description :||Job Description: This position is responsible managing all aspects of the Content Development Department for the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), a medical specialty board that currently certifies approximately 100,000 physicians. This department:· Develops and maintains the content for high-stakes assessments in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine administered online and in secure testing centers, along with related products such as the Family Medicine In-training Examination and the Family Medicine Certification Longitudinal Assessment· Works closely with psychometric leadership and ABFM senior staff to create and implement ongoing improvements to state-of-the-art certification exams and related certification activities· Collaborates on the development and implementation of blueprints for high-stakes exams and knowledge self-assessment content categories to cover the breadth of family medicine topics· Maintains the current test item bank and oversees transitions of the item bank required by updated technology· Ensures that best practices in testing and test security are employed on all assessments· Provides editorial review and maintenance of items for multiple online self-assessment activities, including 25-item per quarter Continuous Knowledge Self Assessments; 13 60-item Knowledge Self-Assessments; and items for ABFM National Journal Club· Recruits, trains, and manages the physician subject-matter experts who serve as test item writers and exam review committee members· Work with the Medical Director of Certification, the Senior Vice President of Psychometrics, and other ABFM senior staff to continuously review and improve items for all forms of assessmentsThis is a hands-on position primarily managing projects and workflow but also includes administrative duties of the Content Development Department such as supervising existing editorial staff; hiring and training new employees; and submitting end-of-the-year reviews. The Director of Content Development and Executive Editor works with a team of highly self-motivated editors and supporting staff to edit examination and self-assessment activity items, assemble exam forms, and maintain the documents, files, and databases required for reviewing and presenting high-stakes certification examinations and other knowledge assessments. This includes planning, organizing, and performing tasks related to each assessment in conjunction with other editors involved in the project. The department also works in partnership with the Medical Director of Certification, the Senior Vice President of Psychometrics, and other ABFM senior staff to strategically develop and manage the process of adding new self-assessment activities, such as new KSAs, including assisting with the selection of knowledge development teams, content development categories, and ongoing item development and revisions.The Director of Content Development and Executive Editor and other members of the department work with physicians to create this content, and over the course of the year, they also meet with groups of physician subject-matter experts to review materials. This requires out-of-state travel about once a month, including some weekend meetings, as well as some involvement in planning events and running committee meetings. Occasional presentations to small and medium-size groups are also required, including training sessions for physicians who write exam questions and workshop sessions to help maintain and improve the skills of experienced item writers. Working with hotel and restaurant staff may also be required while on site. Many of these tasks will require cultivation of professional relationships and ongoing communication with volunteer physicians.Other responsibilities include attendance, and occasional presentations, at ABFM Executive Staff meetings and Knowledge Assessment and Certification committee meetings of the ABFM Board of Directors, events sponsored by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and other medical specialty boards.The Director of Content Development and Executive Editor will be expected to possess or develop a basic knowledge of family medicine in order to understand the content of the examinations, comprehend the feedback provided by the committees, alert committees to potential problems with individual test items, and resolve problems that become apparent outside of review meetings. It will also be necessary to possess or develop a knowledge of best practices in the testing industry, especially among other medical certification Boards, in order to select the items for examination drafts and for the final versions of exams and to improve content development. Some of these skills will be improved and maintained by attendance at conferences aimed at the testing industry.Key Functions of the Role: · Lead the Content Development Department, coordinating team efforts to edit individual items, assess performance of items, meet deadlines for high-stakes exams in family medicine and sports medicine, and participate in the development of other self-assessment products· Construct high-stakes and other examination forms according to exam blueprints and ABFM policy· Oversee technology related to the exam item bank and exam drafts, which are reviewed by subject-matter experts remotely with iPads· Represent the Content Development Department at ABFM Executive Staff and ABFM Board of Directors meetings, as well as at meetings of subspecialty Boards and ABMS meetings· Model excellent editing skills, and maintain high standards for ABFM products· Manage overall function of the Content Development team and associated subject-matter experts· Lead ongoing process improvement in item writing and development· Manage and expand the ABFM item database, regularly assess the breadth and quality of the item bank, and ensure the ongoing security of confidential items· Recruit and train new item writers and maintain ongoing collaborative relationships with them· Recruit, train, and develop content editors and other key content team members for self-assessment activities· Help lead knowledge management teams to develop new knowledge self-assessment modules· Maintain expertise in best practices in certification testing and develop increasing expertise in clinical family medicineJob Requirements: The editor should have a degree in English or journalism, or another writing-related field, with a graduate degree preferred. Substantial previous medical editing experience and familiarity with medical terminology is required. The ideal candidate for this position would also have test development experience. Typical schedule for the position is Monday through Friday, although some weekend travel is necessary.Essential skills include the ability to write clearly, the ability to organize and clarify materials written by physicians, and excellent proofreading skills. Other essential qualities include multitasking, flexibility, the ability to organize tasks and events, good interpersonal, team management, and public speaking skills, self-motivation, clear assessment and communication of priorities, and the ability to meet deadlines. Both attention to detail and the ability to see the bigger context are necessary. The Director of Content Development and Executive Editor should be comfortable working in science-related fields.Software/applications used: Standard Microsoft applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Teams.
