Job Description : Position Overview The Education Department at USC Shoah Foundation works to bring testimony-based education programming, multimedia resources and digital tools to educators and students worldwide that support them in attaining curricular outcomes and promoting the capacity to counter hate in the world. As such, the Program Specialist (Content Specialist) contributes to the development and execution of the Department’s content development strategy and professional development program. We seek a candidate who is dedicated to ensuring that the Department’s testimony-based content and programming is innovative, compelling, accessible and high quality. The Learning and Development Specialist (Content Specialist) creates and manages various types of educational content for K-12/University), including standards-based online/offline lessons, activities and learning objects, teacher guides and resources, and curated video clips among other types and formats. All content is grounded in 1.) audio-visual testimony from the Institute’s Visual History Archive, 2.) developmentally-appropriate and research-based instructional practices, 3.) established guidelines and 4.) strategic priorities. The successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity to create well-written, high quality content within an established publication workflow involving review, feedback and short turn-around times. The Learning and Development Specialist (Content Specialist) also will oversee that the content development team creates presentation materials, handouts, and curates clips of video following standards and guidelines, and that implementation via online and face to face formats is effectively executed. The successful candidate will demonstrate a high level of subject-matter knowledge (e.g. education, Holocaust/genocide education, other related areas), understanding of the field of education, ability to critically think through and prioritize tasks successfully. The Learning and Development Specialist (Content Specialist) will contribute to the development of the content plan and ensure its successful implementation. The candidate will demonstrate an interest in working closely within a cross-functional team, demonstrate strong communication and facilitation skills and demonstrate sensitivity and good judgment. The Learning and Development Specialist (Content Specialist) reports to the Director of Education. Responsibilities Content development Create standards-based, developmentally appropriate educational content for various age groups, subject matter/disciplines and delivery methods. Work with the Director of Education to ensure understanding and direction for the development of content strategy and ensure the team executes the plan within timeline and budget parameters Create well-written content appropriate for target audience Apply research-based and established principles of learning and instruction, with attention to the needs of diverse students Create content for online and offline use and thus be able to create content in various formats with quality, fidelity and high level of engagement per established guidelines Contribute to the development of content in collaboration with content development team and others. Participate in the content review process by providing feedback and ensuring review workflow is adhered to per established guidelines Contribute to the development of the Department’s content strategy Coordinate with the Content Management team to ensure all content goes through the publication workflow Becomes knowledgeable about all content offerings on the Institute’s digital platforms and across programs (e.g. content type, quantity, connection between content and program objectives, how content meets Department objectives) Maintain knowledge and keep abreast of developments in the fields of education, Holocaust/genocide education, digital education and learning and instruction. Professional Development Create standards and guidelines for the development and implementation of professional development programs Delivers professional development programs for educators and other related audiences Develops all presentation materials for various types of programs and delivery methods, including online and face to face Coordinates with the Content Manager to ensure alignment and adherence to standards Monitoring and Reporting Submits monitoring forms before and after all professional development programs to ensure accurate counts for reporting purposes Monitors program quality via established processes Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. Required Knowledge, Characteristics and Skills Background in education field (i.e. teaching and learning theories, pedagogy), curriculum development (e.g. lesson development, learning objects, activities, assessments), instructional design and Holocaust/genocide education Ability to develop dynamic, engaging content for target audience grounded in research-based instructional practices Ability to write content in an accessible way that resonates with target audience using multimedia source material including audiovisual testimony Ability to use databases, identify content and curate source material Experience editing educational content Ability to follow structure and instructions to write templated lessons Strong attention to detail Experience with digital learning design Understanding of educational pedagogy and learning theories Ability to work closely within cross-functional teams Sensitivity and good judgement Ability to use multiple types of software and tools (e.g. Excel, One Drive, Outlook, Base Camp) Cross-cultural competency Interest and commitment to equity and justice issues Bilingual competency a plus Autonomous, self-directed and proactive Exceptional organizational skills, with an ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and thrive in an entrepreneurial, dynamic environment Strong verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and facilitation Professionalism in both internal and external communications Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree strongly preferred 3 years minimum (5 years preferred) combined work experience in each of the following areas: Curriculum development (e.g. online/offline) – Instructional design Education, Teaching and learning (K-12/University; classroom teaching) Holocaust education/genocide education/diversity and inclusion Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated strong facilitation skills Demonstrated proficiency in Excel, MS Word, online learning platforms Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree Minimum Experience: 3 years Minimum Field of Expertise: Experience in developing and conducting training classes. Development of instructional materials.
