HPL is seeking a highly driven, talented, and experienced professional to serve as Content Designer (Senior Communications Specialist) with the Marketing & Communication Division. The successful candidate will be abreast of current trends impacting libraries in today’s technology driven society and delivering results within a high-performance environment. The Senior Communications Specialist will be responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with internal and external customers to write and edit content to effectively share information with Houston’s diverse population. Responsibilities: Develops communications materials including news releases, speeches, talking points, and articles for inclusion in internal and external publications. Creates and produces a wide variety of graphic art and promotional materials. Write, review and edit communications and copy on print and digital materials, such as brochures, flyers, banners, websites, e-newsletters and social media messages. Encourage internal customers and community stakeholders to help expand the Department’s reach on social media. Provides limited supervision and work assignment for departmental volunteers and/or other department employees. Provide feedback to the Department’s varied program areas about graphic concerns and issues, with the goal of strengthening the brand of HPL. Tasks include coordinating shooting and production, responsibilities of the video cameraman and production and post-production of video. Performs other duties as delegated by the Deputy Assistant Director Essential Characteristics: Communicator: Expert in clear, accessible written and oral communication to diverse audiences. WORKING CONDITIONS There are occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less-than-optimal temperature and air conditions. The position may involve dealing with modestly unpleasant situations, as with occasional exposure to office chemicals and/or extensive use of a video display terminal. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires a Bachelor’s degree in art, design, communications, typography or a closely related field. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Two (2) years of experience in media, public relations, the art field or a closely related field are required. Directly related professional experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis. LICENSE REQUIREMENTS None PREFERENCES Preference will be given to applicants with: Expert knowledge of web content management systems Experience developing, designing, and building web pages or maintaining a website for a large organization highly preferred. Photography or videography skills.
