SBA Administrator Releases Statement on Roe v Wade . Chargeback

Small Business Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman said last week’s Supreme Court ruling overturning the 1973 Roe v Wade decision “would endanger the civil liberties of millions of women.”

Guzman said the reversal would lead to ripple effects in communities and our economy, “particularly for female entrepreneurs pursuing the American dream of corporate ownership.”

Guzman reasoned that it is important for female entrepreneurs to decide when to start a family, reiterating that the SBA is committed to supporting women.

SBA Administrator Releases Statement on SCOTUS Dobbs Decision

The landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling in 1973 established a woman’s right to request an abortion for an unwanted pregnancy.

According to LinkedIn statistics, the female employment rate has increased from 40% to 60% since 1973. But can those gains be attributed to Roe v. Wade? Or an evolving economic climate?

Where will Roe v. Wade Reversal have the greatest impact?

State-level politics – The issue of abortion rights is returned to the states, where the elected representatives of the people will decide the path a state will take. By current estimates, about half of the states would ban abortion. Candidates and those already in office will be pressured to make their views known on this issue.

Human Resources Decisions – Small business owners will have to make important decisions in employee benefit plans. Will an employee health plan include benefits to help workers seek abortions in other states (if not available in their own state)? Major companies including Tesla, Patagonia, Amazon, Levi Strauss and Co, Yelp and others have already pledged to do so. Most employee benefit plans cover reproductive health services, including birth control and/or maternity leave. Employers and employees should review existing plans.

Female Entrepreneurs – Entrepreneurs and other self-employed individuals purchase health insurance through Healthcare.gov and other insurance companies. Some insurance companies cover “reproductive services” but may not cover the cost of an abortion. According to April 2022 statistics, the national average cost of a first trimester abortion is $600 and $900 in the second trimester.

Little common ground

Emotions and opinions are strong, with little common ground, as shown by Michigan. The issue appears to be strictly split across party lines. Roe v. Wade’s reversal is condemned by abortion rights advocates and praised by Pro Life supporters.

Michigan Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer said, “How we personally think about abortion—not politics—should lead to important medical decisions.”

Michigan Republican National Committee chairman Ronna McDaniel said, “Life wins! Debate doesn’t return to states.”
