The new licensing system called the Security Guard Licensing Act, 2021 was brought in to curb security guard fraud and corruption. This act allows security agencies to monitor their employees better and make sure they are being honest in the workplace.
There are about six hundred and sixty-three security guards in the province. Of these, there are only a handful of people with the proper licenses. The National Security Guard Association of Canada says that one hundred and eighty-one of these security guards have been suspended for fraud or disciplinary action since the introduction of the new licensing system. Ontario’s numbers are much lower than those of other provinces.
As well as licensing, the security guard license that you hold is also important if you want to work in the correctional services sector. A majority of correctional services departments in the Canadian government operate on large volumes of budgets. To work as a correctional service officer (CSO), you will need to have a certificate from the Canadian Police College. It is also required that you have at least a diploma from an accredited school and pass two examinations, the Ontario Combating Entry and Security Skills examination and the Ontario Specialist Fire Education and Research Foundation exam.
Once you have become licensed, you are then required to complete security guard training completion. This training completion consists of classroom and practical work. You will learn many valuable techniques and strategies that will be beneficial for you in your future career. In addition to the classroom training, you will also have to attend courses outside of the classroom. These courses will teach you about subjects such as anatomy, criminology and psychology. Security guards are also trained in fire prevention, first aid and emergency procedures.
Most security guard companies require their guards to have at least a high school diploma or equivalent. In addition to this requirement, most companies will also require their guards to undergo an extensive background check. The reason for doing this is to ensure the people working for them have not had any previous complaints against them. These background checks are also part of the licensing process.
