Tesla Motors, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA), Dogecoin – US Dollar (CRYPTO:$DOGE) – Elon Musk asks ‘Is a new platform needed?’: Changing Twitter logo from bird to doge would be ‘sick’

tesla, inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter on Saturday to ask whether a new social media platform should be created to challenge Twitter Inc (NYSE: TWTR)

What happened: In a series of tweets, Musk asked if it was time for a new platform to replace Twitter. He said the company has a unique responsibility when it comes to being the primary platform for public debate.

Since Twitter acts as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to the principles of free speech fundamentally undermines democracy.

He went on to directly ask whether it is time to set up an alternative to the leading microblogging and social networking service company.

Musk then continued to voice his opinion that Twitter does not fairly present both sides of the political debate.

Doesn’t sound very balanced

Earlier, the CEO of India-based smaller social media platform Koo, promoted as a Twitter rival, echoed his views. Aprameya Radhakrishnan invited Musk to join the platform by explaining the decentralized approach in detail.

Musk’s Poll on Twitter: In response to Musk’s Firday poll about whether Twitter adheres to free speech principles, his legion of followers responded overwhelmingly with a negative response.

Freedom of speech is essential for a functioning democracy, according to Musk. About 70% of people find Twitter stifling free speech, something to think about.

Musk added a warning in a follow-up tweet to the poll. “The implications of this poll will be important. Please vote with caution,” he had said.

Freedom of expression is essential for a functioning democracy.

Do you believe that Twitter strictly adheres to this principle?

Incidentally, Musk previously held a poll to gauge opinions on whether the Twitter algorithm should be open source. More than three quarters of the respondents answered in the affirmative. Having an open source gives people information about how Twitter decides what to display in its feed.

Consequences of poll results: Musk has projected himself in the past as a ‘promoter of free speech’.

Earlier this month, he announced in a tweet that Starlink has been approached to block news sources from Russia. While declaring that he will not do so, the Tesla CEO said he is an “absolutist of free speech.”

Musk has also often attacked mainstream media companies in the past for presenting polarizing and biased information.

Musk’s criticism of Twitter provoked mixed reactions from users of the platform. One of them noted that Twitter is a private company and thus is free to make its own rules.

Another user explained that Twitter isn’t exactly anti-freedom of speech, and that the difficulty lies in distinguishing between misinformation, free speech and hate speech. Twitter has no choice but to censor many posts, the user reasoned.

Tesla closed Friday’s session at $1,010.64, down 0.32%.
