Netflix’s latest streaming hit is Rush, a 2022 comedy drama starring Adam Sandler. The story revolves around Sandler’s character, Stanley Sugarman, a professional basketball scout for the Philadelphia 76ers. It depicts Sugarman’s nomadic lifestyle in search of a potential NBA star and juxtaposes that with what he truly desires: a quieter life with his family as the team’s assistant coach. Sugarman has to overcome many obstacles to achieve his own goals while helping those around him, and his methods of doing so embody the characteristics of an entrepreneur.
Rush contains a multitude of entrepreneurial lessons and similarly shapes Sandler’s character to embody the core characteristics of an entrepreneur himself.
One theme that is present throughout the film is taking personal risks. Taking risks is an integral part of entrepreneurship; without it, great ideas would never get off the ground.
In RushSugarman risks his job by bringing Spanish basketball player Bo Cruz to America without his head coach’s approval. Taking this risk forces the two to innovate and work together to achieve their goals of playing and coaching in the NBA. Sugarman also invests his own time and money in Cruz’s athletic growth. The reaction to this decision could have been disastrous: an unemployed ex-scout and failed basketball player was stranded abroad. Instead, taking those risks pushes Cruz and Sugarman outside their comfort zones and makes them work smarter to develop their existing roles.
Taking risks can boost self-confidence. It can also increase the trust of the people around the risk taker as they feel that the people around them think they are worth the risk.

Never give up
Entrepreneurs do not succumb to failure. Instead, they overcome hurdles, learn, adapt and continue to work towards their goals. Sugarman faces numerous hurdles: living away from his family, being demoted, having a turbulent relationship with his boss, and dealing with a lack of support from those around him are some of the many. However, Sugarman works diligently, has goals that extend beyond himself, and understands that if he stays on track, his work will make a real difference to many.

Humility is crucial in entrepreneurship. Excessive pride or arrogance can build bridges with colleagues, blur goals and divide a united team into factions. In Rush, Sugarman practices humility. He understands that he has imperfections, will fail and then will have to lean on the people around him.

Is Adam Sandlers? Rush based on a true story?
As believable as it may seem, the film is fiction. Despite this, Rush features dozens of sports cameos, featuring appearances from NBA stars including Shaquille O’Neal and Allen Iverson, with LeBron James serving as producer.
